Who wrote the novel that inspired Fight Club (1999)?

The story behind the answer

Chuck Palahniuk wrote the novel that inspired Fight Club (1999).

Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club was published in 1996, three years before David Fincher’s film adaptation. The story follows an unnamed narrator whose dissatisfaction with consumer culture leads to a friendship with the charismatic Tyler Durden and the creation of an underground fight club that develops into a broader anti-establishment movement.

Jim Uhls wrote the screenplay, and the film stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Although the movie initially divided audiences and performed modestly in theaters, it gained a substantial following after its home-video release.

A common mistake is attributing the book to Bret Easton Ellis because both writers are associated with provocative contemporary fiction and critiques of consumer culture. Fight Club is Palahniuk’s novel, while Ellis wrote American Psycho, which was adapted into a different 2000 film.
