Nicolas Cage played FBI chemical-weapons specialist Stanley Goodspeed in The Rock (1996).
Goodspeed is assigned to help stop a group of rogue U.S. Marines who seize Alcatraz Island and threaten San Francisco with chemical rockets. Because the imprisoned former British agent John Mason knows the island’s tunnels, the FBI pairs Goodspeed with Mason, played by Sean Connery.
Michael Bay directed the action film, which combines military suspense, explosive set pieces, and the distinctive setting of the former prison island. Although the movie presents a fictional crisis, Alcatraz itself is a real island in San Francisco Bay and operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963.
The Rock is sometimes confused with Face/Off, another 1990s action film starring Cage and John Travolta. In The Rock, Travolta does not appear; Cage shares the main cast with Connery and Ed Harris.
