Who wrote the majority of the lyrics for Pink Floyd's music?

The story behind the answer

Roger Waters wrote the majority of the lyrics for Pink Floyd's music. He became the band's principal lyricist after Syd Barrett's departure and increasingly shaped its themes, concepts, and political outlook.

Waters wrote most of the lyrics for Pink Floyd's major albums from The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) through The Final Cut (1983). The Wall was written almost entirely by Waters and drew heavily on his experiences, anxieties, and views about postwar society.

The other members still contributed important music and lyrics. David Gilmour co-wrote or wrote several songs, including “Learning to Fly,” while Richard Wright contributed tracks such as “The Great Gig in the Sky.” Syd Barrett was the band's original creative leader and wrote much of its early material.

A common mix-up is confusing lyric writing with musical composition. Waters dominated the words and concepts, but Pink Floyd's sound also depended heavily on Gilmour's guitar and vocals, Wright's keyboards, and Nick Mason's drumming.
