Who wrote the episode Total Rickall?

The story behind the answer

Mike McMahan wrote the Rick and Morty episode “Total Rickall.”

The episode is the fourth installment of season 2 and first aired on Adult Swim on August 16, 2015. Its story traps the Smith family inside their home while parasitic creatures implant happy false memories, making every new or familiar character seem real.

McMahan’s script uses the structure of a clip show as a mystery: flashbacks are not merely comedic cutaways but evidence created by the parasites. Morty eventually realizes that the creatures can implant only positive memories, so unpleasant memories help identify the genuine family members.

A common mix-up is confusing the writer with the director, Juan Meza-León, or with other Rick and Morty writers such as Dan Guterman and Ryan Ridley. The episode is also notable for introducing Mr. Poopybutthole, who became a recurring character.
