Answer
Frederick Jackson Turner
Answer
Frederick Jackson Turner
Frederick Jackson Turner wrote the 1893 essay “The Significance of the Frontier in American History.”
Turner presented the paper at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago on July 12, 1893. He argued that the availability of unsettled land and repeated movement westward had strongly shaped American democracy, individualism, and national identity.
His frontier thesis became one of the most influential interpretations of United States history. Turner treated the frontier as a process in which settlers adapted to new environments and institutions, rather than simply as a fixed geographic boundary.
Later historians criticized the thesis for underestimating Native American societies, women, Mexican communities, African Americans, environmental damage, and the role of government. The 1890 census had declared that a continuous frontier line could no longer be said to exist, but Turner’s essay was not the census report itself.
