Who wrote Patsy Cline’s signature song “Crazy”?

The story behind the answer

Willie Nelson wrote Patsy Cline’s signature song “Crazy.”

Nelson wrote the song in 1961, before he had achieved major success as a recording artist. Patsy Cline recorded it later that year, with Owen Bradley producing, and her version became one of the defining country recordings of the 1960s.

Cline’s performance is noted for its controlled phrasing and emotional vocal delivery. The song reached number two on Billboard’s country chart and became a major crossover hit. Nelson eventually recorded his own version as well.

The song is often associated so strongly with Cline that listeners sometimes assume she wrote it. She did not: the composer was Nelson, with Paul Buskirk credited on some accounts for helping with the musical arrangement. “Crazy” remains one of Nelson’s most widely recorded compositions.
