Which singer played bass for Buddy Holly during Holly’s final 1959 tour?
Answer
Waylon Jennings
Answer
Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings played bass for Buddy Holly during Holly’s final 1959 tour.
Jennings joined Holly’s backing band after Holly’s previous bass player left. The tour was the Winter Dance Party, which traveled through the American Midwest in difficult winter conditions. Jennings performed alongside Holly and guitarist Tommy Allsup.
Jennings was originally scheduled to fly with Holly after the February 3, 1959, concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, but gave his seat to J. P. Richardson, known as the Big Bopper. Holly’s plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing Holly, Richardson, and Ritchie Valens. Jennings therefore survived the crash because he remained on the tour bus.
He later became a central figure in outlaw country, known for albums such as Honky Tonk Heroes and Wanted! The Outlaws. The story is sometimes confused with Tommy Allsup’s experience: Allsup lost a coin toss to Ritchie Valens for the other available seat, while Jennings gave his seat away.
