Answer
Art Spiegelman
Answer
Art Spiegelman
Art Spiegelman wrote and illustrated the graphic memoir Maus.
Maus presents Spiegelman’s father Vladek Spiegelman recounting his experiences as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust. The work uses animals as visual figures: Jews appear as mice, Germans as cats, Poles as pigs, and Americans as dogs. These conventions are artistic devices rather than literal descriptions of identity.
Maus was first serialized in Spiegelman’s underground comic Raw before being collected in two volumes. The first volume, My Father Bleeds History, appeared in 1986, and the second, And Here My Troubles Began, followed in 1991.
The complete work won a special Pulitzer Prize in 1992. It is often called a graphic novel, although its structure combines memoir, biography, history, and autobiography. Spiegelman’s dual focus on his father’s wartime survival and their difficult relationship is central to the book.
