Who wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life?

The story behind the answer

Bryan Lee O’Malley wrote and illustrated the graphic novel Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life.

Published by Oni Press in 2004, it is the first volume in the Scott Pilgrim series. The story follows Scott Pilgrim, a 23-year-old musician in Toronto, as he falls for Ramona Flowers and learns that he must defeat her seven evil exes to date her.

O’Malley’s work blends alternative-comics character writing with visual ideas influenced by video games, manga, and pop culture. The books use exaggerated action, sound effects, and surreal transformations while keeping their setting recognizable as contemporary Toronto. Scott’s romantic quest is also framed as a story about immaturity, responsibility, and growing up.

A common mix-up is assigning the graphic novels to Edgar Wright, who directed the 2010 film adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Wright adapted O’Malley’s books, but he did not create them. The six-volume series concluded with Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour in 2010.
