Who wrote and illustrated the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis?

The story behind the answer

Marjane Satrapi wrote and illustrated the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis.

Persepolis recounts Satrapi’s childhood and early adulthood in Iran and Europe, beginning during the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The book explores family, politics, religion, war, exile, identity, and the experience of growing up amid major social change.

Satrapi drew the book in stark black-and-white panels. Its title refers to Persepolis, the ancient ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire near modern-day Shiraz in Iran.

The work was originally published in French in two parts, followed by a second two-part continuation. Satrapi later co-directed the 2007 animated film adaptation with Vincent Paronnaud. The film received the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
