Who won top R&B Artist at the Billboard Music Awards 2018?

The story behind the answer

Bruno Mars won Top R&B Artist at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards.

The ceremony took place on May 20, 2018, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with Kelly Clarkson serving as host. Billboard’s genre awards recognize artists whose performance on the organization’s charts reflects sales, streaming, radio airplay and other audience activity during the eligibility period.

Mars was also a major winner that night. His album 24K Magic and its hit single “That’s What I Like” helped him earn several honors, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Male Artist and Top R&B Song. “That’s What I Like” was one of the defining R&B-pop hits of the period and later won major recognition at the Grammy Awards as well.

A common mix-up is confusing Top R&B Artist with Top R&B Song: the artist award went to Bruno Mars, while the song award recognized “That’s What I Like.” Other prominent 2018 winners included Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift and BTS, but they won in different categories.
