Who won the women's singles title at the 2020 US Open?

The story behind the answer

Naomi Osaka won the women’s singles title at the 2020 US Open. She defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, recovering from a set down to win 1–6, 6–3, 6–3 and claim her second US Open championship.

The tournament was played in New York during the COVID-19 pandemic, with strict health protocols and no spectators in the main stadiums. Several leading players withdrew, including defending champion Bianca Andreescu, while world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty and world No. 2 Simona Halep also did not compete. Serena Williams reached the semifinals, where Azarenka defeated her.

Osaka’s victory was her third Grand Slam title, following her 2018 US Open triumph and 2019 Australian Open success. The final was especially notable because she became the first woman since 1994 to win a US Open women’s singles final after losing the opening set. She later completed her fourth major title by winning the 2021 Australian Open.
