Who won the first Wimbledon gentlemen's singles title in 1877?

Spencer Gore won the first Wimbledon gentlemen's singles title in 1877.

The inaugural tournament was held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London, from 9 to 19 July 1877. It was the first official lawn-tennis championship staged by the club and featured only a gentlemen's singles event.

Gore defeated William Marshall in the final by 6–1, 6–2, 6–4. The match lasted 48 minutes, and Gore received 12 guineas plus a silver challenge cup donated by the sporting newspaper The Field. Twenty-two players entered, each paying one guinea.

The tournament was not yet the globally familiar Wimbledon of today: the rules were new, the court arrangements differed, and the final was delayed by rain. Gore returned in 1878 as defending champion but lost the challenge round to Frank Hadow, who used an effective high-lobbing style.
