Who won the women’s singles table tennis gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Chen Meng won the women’s singles table tennis gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Chen defeated compatriot Sun Yingsha in the final at Paris 2024. The result made Chen the first woman to win consecutive Olympic singles titles, because she had also taken gold at Tokyo 2020. Sun received the silver medal, while Japan’s Hina Hayata won bronze.

The final was a meeting between two leading members of China’s national team. Chen’s experience and close-table counterattacking helped her overcome Sun, who had been the world number one and entered the tournament as a major favourite.

Paris 2024 was Chen’s third Olympic Games. She had also won women’s doubles gold at Tokyo 2020, when she partnered Wang Manyu. Olympic singles, doubles, and team medals are recorded separately, so a player’s success in one event does not automatically identify the winner of another.
