How many games are normally needed to win a best-of-seven table tennis match?

The story behind the answer

A player normally needs four games to win a best-of-seven table tennis match.

In a best-of-seven format, the first player to win four games wins the match. The contest can therefore finish in four games if one player wins every game, or it can continue to a maximum of seven games if the score reaches 3–3.

Each game is a separate scoring unit, and modern international games are generally played to 11 points, with a two-point margin required after 10–10. The game score and match score are different: a player can win a game 11–9 and still need more games to win the match.

Some competitions use best-of-five matches, especially in lower-level or earlier-round play. That is why the stated best-of-seven format is essential to the answer; four is the minimum number of games required for victory in that format.
