Who won the women's singles at the 1999 French Open?
Answer
Steffi Graf
Answer
Steffi Graf
Steffi Graf won the women’s singles title at the 1999 French Open.
In the final at Roland Garros in Paris, the 29-year-old German defeated Switzerland’s Martina Hingis 4–6, 7–5, 6–2. Graf recovered after losing the opening set and won the deciding two sets to claim the championship on June 5, 1999.
The victory was especially notable because Graf had not won a Grand Slam singles title since the 1996 US Open. On her way to the final, she defeated three of the tournament’s top four seeds: Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles and Hingis, who was the world No. 1 at the time.
This was Graf’s sixth French Open singles title and her 22nd—and final—Grand Slam singles championship. A common mix-up is confusing the women’s singles winner with the defending champion, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, who lost to Hingis in the semifinals, or with the women’s doubles champions, Serena and Venus Williams.
