Who won the Tour de France five consecutive times from 1991 to 1995?
Answer
Miguel Indurain
Answer
Miguel Indurain
Miguel Indurain won the Tour de France five consecutive times from 1991 to 1995.
The Spanish rider’s first victory came in 1991, when he took control of the race after the Pyrenean stages and held the yellow jersey to Paris. He successfully defended the title in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995, becoming the first rider to win five Tours in succession and the fourth to reach five total victories.
Indurain was renowned for his exceptional time-trial ability, powerful endurance and calm race management. His large build was unusual for a top stage-race climber, but his ability to gain substantial time against the clock allowed him to ride defensively in the mountains. During his five winning Tours, he won several individual time trials and controlled the overall classification without relying on frequent stage victories.
He also won the Giro d’Italia in 1992 and 1993, becoming one of the few riders to achieve the Giro–Tour double in the same season. The achievement is sometimes confused with the records of Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Eddy Merckx, who also won five Tours, but none matched Indurain’s five consecutive victories.
