Who won The Open in his only appearance, in 1953?

The story behind the answer

Ben Hogan won The Open in 1953, his only appearance in the championship.

Hogan travelled to Britain for the 82nd Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, held from 8 to 10 July 1953. He shot 73, 71, 70 and 68 for a total of 282, winning by four strokes over four tied runners-up, including Peter Thomson and Roberto De Vicenzo.

The victory completed the first three legs of Hogan's remarkable 1953 season: he had already won the Masters and U.S. Open. A scheduling conflict with the PGA Championship meant the modern Grand Slam was impossible that year, but Hogan remains the only golfer to win the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship in the same calendar year.

Hogan prepared carefully for the unfamiliar conditions, arriving early and practising with the smaller British ball. His aggressive play on Carnoustie's sixth hole later inspired the nickname “Hogan's Alley.” Despite the historic win, he never entered another Open.
