Who won the 1989 Open Championship in a three-man playoff at Royal Troon?

The story behind the answer

Mark Calcavecchia won the 1989 Open Championship in a three-man playoff at Royal Troon.

The championship ended with Calcavecchia, Greg Norman and Wayne Grady tied at 13 under par after 72 holes. Norman had charged into contention with a course-record 64 in the final round, while Calcavecchia closed with a 68 to join the playoff.

It was the first Open playoff in 14 years and the first played under the four-hole aggregate format introduced in 1985. The players contested holes 1, 2, 17 and 18 at Royal Troon. Calcavecchia prevailed, earning his first major championship and his only Open title.

A common mix-up is to credit Norman because his final-round 64 was the dramatic score that forced the playoff. Wayne Grady was also not merely a playoff participant: he shared the lead after regulation before finishing behind Calcavecchia. The victory made Calcavecchia the first American Open champion in six years.
