Who won The Open Championship at Royal St George's in 2021?

The story behind the answer

Collin Morikawa won The Open Championship at Royal St George’s in 2021.

The tournament, officially the 149th Open Championship, was played from 15 to 18 July 2021 at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, England. It was the 15th Open held at the seaside course and the first there since Darren Clarke’s victory in 2011. The championship had been postponed from 2020 after that year’s Open was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morikawa began the final round one stroke behind the lead but produced a bogey-free 66. He finished at 15 under par, 265, two strokes ahead of Jordan Spieth. Louis Oosthuizen, who led after the opening round, finished further back, while Jon Rahm was also among the leading contenders but did not win.

The victory was especially notable because Morikawa won on his Open debut. He became the first player since Ben Curtis in 2003 to win the championship at the first attempt. It was also Morikawa’s second major title, following his 2020 PGA Championship victory.
