Who won The Open Championship after a playoff at Turnberry in 2009?

The story behind the answer

Stewart Cink won The Open Championship after a playoff at Turnberry in 2009.

The 2009 event was the 138th Open Championship, held from 16 to 19 July on the Ailsa Course at Turnberry in Ayrshire, Scotland. Cink and five-time Open champion Tom Watson both finished regulation play at 2 under par, producing a four-hole aggregate playoff over holes 5, 6, 17 and 18.

The playoff began evenly, but Cink gained a crucial stroke on the first extra hole when Watson made bogey. At the par-five 17th, Watson struggled from heavy rough and made double bogey, while Cink made birdie. Cink then birdied the 18th to win the playoff by six strokes, 14 to 20.

The result was one of the most memorable endings in Open history because 59-year-old Watson had been attempting to become the oldest major champion. He needed only a par at the 72nd hole to win outright in regulation, but his approach ran beyond the green and he could not save par. Ross Fisher and Lee Westwood were prominent contenders but did not enter the playoff.
