Who won the only Open held at Prince's Golf Club in 1932?

The story behind the answer

Gene Sarazen won the only Open Championship held at Prince's Golf Club, in 1932.

Sarazen won the 67th Open at Sandwich from 8 to 10 June 1932. He led after every round and carded 70, 69, 70 and 74 for a total of 283, finishing five strokes ahead of Macdonald Smith. The victory was Sarazen's only Open Championship title.

The win was part of an extraordinary season. Two weeks later, Sarazen won the U.S. Open in New York, making him only the second golfer after Bobby Jones to win both the British Open and U.S. Open in the same year. Sarazen ultimately collected seven professional major titles and completed the career Grand Slam with his 1935 Masters victory.

A common mix-up is to associate Sarazen's 1932 season only with his U.S. Open victory. He won both that year, but the Open Championship triumph came at Prince's, not at Royal St George's, which hosted qualifying and was a neighbouring venue.
