Ma Long won the men’s singles table tennis title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The tournament was held in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Tokyo Games to be postponed from 2020. Ma Long represented China and defeated his compatriot Fan Zhendong in the final, successfully defending the men’s singles Olympic title he had won at Rio 2016.
Ma Long became the first table tennis player to win Olympic singles titles at two consecutive Games. His Tokyo victory also added to a career that included multiple World Championship and World Cup singles titles, making him one of the sport’s most decorated players.
The event is often called the 2020 Olympic tournament even though its matches took place in 2021. Fan Zhendong was the runner-up in Tokyo and later won the men’s singles title at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
