Who won the men's singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Andy Murray won the men’s singles gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Murray defeated Switzerland’s Roger Federer in the final at Wimbledon, the Olympic tennis venue, winning 6–2, 6–1, 6–4. The victory came only four weeks after Federer had beaten Murray in the Wimbledon Championships final on the same Centre Court, so the Olympic final carried an unusually direct sense of reversal.

The tournament was played from 28 July to 5 August 2012 on grass at the All England Club. Federer won silver, while Argentina’s Juan Martín del Potro took bronze after defeating Novak Djokovic. Rafael Nadal, the defending Olympic champion from 2008, withdrew before the Games because of a knee injury.

Murray’s gold was historically important for Britain. He became the first British man to win Olympic singles tennis gold since Josiah Ritchie in 1908, when the event was also held at Wimbledon. The result is sometimes confused with Murray’s later Olympic success: he defended the singles title at Rio 2016, becoming the first player to win two Olympic singles gold medals.
