Who won the men's singles at the 1989 French Open?

The story behind the answer

Michael Chang won the men’s singles at the 1989 French Open. He defeated Stefan Edberg in the final, winning 6–1, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2 on the clay courts of Roland-Garros.

The victory was Chang’s first Grand Slam title and remains his only major singles championship. At 17 years and 109 days old, he became the youngest male Grand Slam singles champion in the Open Era, a record that made the triumph especially memorable.

Chang’s run also included a celebrated fourth-round victory over defending champion and world No. 1 Ivan Lendl. After falling behind Edberg by two sets to one in the final, Chang recovered to win the last two sets and secure the championship.

A common mix-up is to name Edberg, who was the runner-up, or Mats Wilander, who had won the previous French Open in 1988. In the women’s singles tournament that same year, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario won the title.
