Who won the main event of UFC 205, the promotion’s first event at Madison Square Garden?

Conor McGregor won the main event of UFC 205, defeating Eddie Alvarez by second-round technical knockout.

The bout took place on November 12, 2016, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. McGregor captured the UFC lightweight championship, adding it to the featherweight title he already held.

McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to hold two UFC championship belts simultaneously. He dropped Alvarez twice in the opening round before finishing him at 3:04 of the second round with punches.

A common mix-up is confusing UFC 205 with McGregor’s later lightweight-title victory over Alvarez as a separate event; UFC 205 was that title fight and marked the UFC’s New York debut.
