Who won the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight championship at UFC 208?

The story behind the answer

Germaine de Randamie won the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight championship at UFC 208.

The title fight took place on February 11, 2017, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. De Randamie faced former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm and won by unanimous decision after five rounds. The victory made her the first UFC champion in the women’s featherweight division.

The division was created for fighters weighing up to 145 pounds, four weight classes above the UFC women’s strawweight limit. The inaugural championship was contested before the UFC had staged many fights in the division, so its early title history is sometimes confused with that of Invicta FC, which had already promoted women’s featherweight bouts.

De Randamie’s reign was brief. She vacated the championship later in 2017, and Cris Cyborg won the vacant title at UFC 214 by defeating Tonya Evinger. Cyborg is therefore the second UFC women’s featherweight champion, not the inaugural one.
