Answer
Kim Dong-moon and Gil Young-ah
Answer
Kim Dong-moon and Gil Young-ah
Kim Dong-moon and Gil Young-ah won the first Olympic badminton mixed doubles gold medal in 1996.
Mixed doubles made its Olympic debut at the Atlanta Games, four years after badminton became a full medal sport. The South Korean pair defeated compatriots Park Joo-bong and Chung Myung-hee in the final, giving South Korea both medals in the inaugural Olympic mixed doubles event.
Kim Dong-moon later became one of badminton's most successful doubles players. He won Olympic gold again in men's doubles at Athens in 2004, while Gil Young-ah had already established herself as a leading mixed doubles specialist.
The event's introduction completed the five-event Olympic badminton programme still used today: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles. The 1996 result is sometimes mixed up with later Chinese Olympic champions.
