Who won the American League Manager of the Year award in 2012?

The story behind the answer

The 2012 American League Manager of the Year award was won by Bob Melvin of the Oakland Athletics.

Melvin earned the honor after guiding Oakland to a 94–68 record and the American League West title. The Athletics overcame the heavily favored Texas Rangers late in the season, winning the division on the regular season’s final day. Oakland then reached the postseason for the first time since 2006.

The award was voted on by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Melvin narrowly finished ahead of Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter, whose team also had a remarkable season: Baltimore went 93–69 and posted its first winning record since 1997.

A common mix-up is Melvin’s 2007 award, which came in the National League while he managed the Arizona Diamondbacks. His 2012 honor was his first American League Manager of the Year award, and it made him one of the managers to win the award in both leagues. Melvin later won the AL award again in 2018 with Oakland.
