Michael Schumacher won the 2000 Formula One World Championship driving for Ferrari.

The German driver secured the title at the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on 8 October 2000, the penultimate race of a 17-round season. He defeated McLaren’s Mika Häkkinen in a closely fought championship battle, finishing the year with 108 points and nine victories.

The achievement was especially significant for Ferrari. Schumacher became the team’s first World Drivers’ Champion since Jody Scheckter won in 1979, ending a 21-year wait. Ferrari also won the Constructors’ Championship in 2000, with Rubens Barrichello scoring alongside Schumacher.

This was Schumacher’s third drivers’ title overall, following his two championships with Benetton in 1994 and 1995. It was the beginning of Ferrari’s dominant early-2000s period: Schumacher went on to win four more consecutive drivers’ championships with the team from 2001 through 2004. The 2000 title is therefore both a personal milestone and a turning point in Ferrari’s Formula One history.
