Who won both the 20 km and 50 km walks at the 2000 Sydney Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Robert Korzeniowski won both the 20-kilometre and 50-kilometre walks at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Polish race walker won the 20-kilometre event on 22 September 2000 in 1:18:59, setting an Olympic record. One week later, on 29 September, he won the 50-kilometre walk in 3:42:22. That double made him the first athlete to win both Olympic race-walking distances at the same Games.

The achievement was especially demanding because the events test different strengths. The 20-kilometre race rewards speed and efficiency over a shorter distance, while the 50-kilometre event requires sustained pace and technical discipline for several hours. Race walkers must keep one foot in contact with the ground and maintain a straightened supporting leg until the body passes over it.

Korzeniowski’s Sydney triumph formed part of a larger Olympic career. He had already won the 50-kilometre walk at Atlanta in 1996 and later won it again at Athens in 2004, giving him three consecutive Olympic titles in that event.
