Lewis began the streak in Los Angeles in 1984, where he also won the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 × 100-meter relay. In Seoul in 1988, he retained the long-jump title with an 8.72-meter leap. He won again in Barcelona in 1992 and completed the run in Atlanta in 1996 with a best jump of 8.50 meters.
The achievement made Lewis only the third Olympian to win the same individual event four consecutive times, following discus champion Al Oerter and sailor Paul Elvstrøm. He was also the only man to win four Olympic long-jump medals.
A frequent mix-up involves Mike Powell, who beat Lewis at the 1991 World Championships and set the still-famous world record of 8.95 meters there. Powell did not win an Olympic long-jump title. Lewis’s Olympic record was about sustained championship excellence rather than the single longest jump.
