Who were the original members of ABBA?

The story behind the answer

The original members of ABBA were Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

The quartet consisted of two singer-songwriters—Ulvaeus and Andersson—and two lead vocalists, Fältskog and Lyngstad. Their musical partnership grew from earlier collaborations and from the fact that the women were already connected romantically to the two male members: Fältskog married Ulvaeus, while Lyngstad later married Andersson.

Before the familiar name ABBA was adopted, the group was credited as “Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid.” The initials of the four first names ultimately produced the palindrome ABBA. Lyngstad was also widely known by her nickname, Frida, but “Frida Anderson” is incorrect: her name was Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

The four members remained the core lineup throughout ABBA’s classic recording career. Session musicians contributed to many recordings, but they were not members of the group.
