Who was the Yuan commander at the Battle of Yamen?
Answer
Zhang Hongfan
Answer
Zhang Hongfan
Zhang Hongfan was the Yuan commander at the Battle of Yamen.
The battle, also called the Battle of Yashan, took place on 19 March 1279 in Guangdong during the final phase of the Song–Yuan Wars. Zhang Hongfan commanded the Yuan forces against the Southern Song fleet, whose leading commander was Zhang Shijie.
The Song fleet had chained many ships together in the bay to prevent desertion and protect the young emperor Zhao Bing. Zhang Hongfan’s forces blockaded the fleet, cut off its access to fresh water and supplies, and eventually defeated it. The battle ended organized Southern Song resistance and brought most of China under Yuan rule.
Aju was another important Mongol general but was not the commander at Yamen. Kublai Khan was the Yuan emperor who directed the broader conquest, not the battlefield commander there. Bayan of the Baarin played a major role in the earlier conquest of the Southern Song, especially in the capture of its capital, Lin’an.
