Which river was the site of the Mongols' first victory over the Rus' principalities in 1223?

The story behind the answer

The Kalka River was the site of the Mongols’ first victory over the Rus’ principalities in 1223.

The Battle of the Kalka River was fought on May 31, 1223, in what is now Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. Mongol commanders Jebe and Subutai led a force against a coalition of several Rus’ principalities and their Cuman allies.

The Mongols used feigned retreats and maneuver warfare to draw the Rus’ forces away from their organized positions. The coalition was eventually trapped near the river and suffered a devastating defeat. Several princes were killed, and only a small portion of the army returned home.

This battle was a raid rather than the beginning of the full Mongol conquest of Kievan Rus’. Batu Khan’s major invasion came more than a decade later, beginning in 1236. The battle is therefore remembered as the first major Mongol–Rus’ encounter and a warning of the invasion to come.
