Who was the winner of the women's singles at the US Open in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Angelique Kerber won the women’s singles title at the 2016 US Open.

The German defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Kerber won 6–3, 4–6, 6–4, claiming the second Grand Slam singles title of her career after winning the Australian Open earlier that year.

The victory also secured Kerber the world No. 1 ranking for the first time. She replaced Serena Williams at the top after Williams lost in the semifinals to Plíšková. Kerber’s 2016 season therefore combined major success with a historic rise to the summit of women’s tennis.

One common mix-up is confusing the US Open with the 2016 Olympic tennis tournament. Kerber reached the Olympic final in Rio, but Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig won that match. At the US Open in New York, however, Kerber was the champion. She became the first player since Martina Hingis in 1997 to win both hard-court majors in one season.
