Who was the winner of the men's singles at the 2016 US Open?

The story behind the answer

Stan Wawrinka won the men’s singles title at the 2016 US Open.

The Swiss player defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the final, winning 6–7, 6–4, 7–5, 6–3. Although Djokovic took the opening-set tiebreak, Wawrinka gradually turned the match around with powerful baseline hitting, a celebrated one-handed backhand, and strong performance in the longer rallies.

The victory was Wawrinka’s first US Open championship and his third Grand Slam singles title. His earlier major victories came at the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final. Winning the 2016 US Open made Wawrinka one of the few active players outside the “Big Four” era to collect multiple major titles.

The tournament was also notable for Wawrinka’s demanding route to the championship. He needed 17 sets to win his final four matches, including a five-set semifinal against Kei Nishikori. Djokovic, meanwhile, entered the final as the defending champion but was affected by physical problems and struggled to maintain momentum after the first set.
