Who was the Russian-born American businessman known as 'Sam the Banana Man'?

The story behind the answer

Who was the Russian-born American businessman known as “Sam the Banana Man”? Samuel Zemurray was the answer.

Born Schmiel Zmurri in Kishinev, Bessarabia, in 1877, Zemurray emigrated to the United States and entered the produce business. He made his fortune buying and selling bananas, eventually establishing the Cuyamel Fruit Company in Honduras. His nickname reflected both his commercial success and his outsized reputation in the banana trade.

Zemurray later became a major shareholder and president of the United Fruit Company, then one of the world’s most powerful fruit corporations. His business activities extended beyond commerce: United Fruit and its executives wielded substantial influence in Central American politics, especially where land, railways, ports, and export privileges were involved.

A common mix-up is confusing Zemurray with Minor C. Keith or Andrew W. Preston. Keith helped build United Fruit’s transportation and production network, while Preston was an early company leader; neither was “Sam the Banana Man.”
