Who was the first president of the United Fruit Company?
Answer
Andrew W. Preston
Answer
Andrew W. Preston
Andrew W. Preston was the first president of the United Fruit Company.
Preston was a Massachusetts businessman who helped establish the Boston Fruit Company in 1884. That company became a major force in the developing banana trade, combining plantations, shipping and access to American markets. In 1899, Boston Fruit merged with Minor C. Keith’s Tropical Trading and Transport Company and related interests to create United Fruit.
The new corporation was based in Boston, with Preston as president and Keith as vice-president. Keith contributed railways, plantations and banana-export operations in Central America, while Preston brought West Indian plantations, steamships and an established commercial network. The merger created one of the most powerful fruit companies in the Western Hemisphere.
A common mix-up is choosing Minor C. Keith because he was a founder and a highly visible figure in Central American railways and banana production. Samuel Zemurray was another major banana entrepreneur, but he was not United Fruit’s first president. Preston remained associated with the company until his death in 1924, when he was still serving as its president.
