Which Guatemalan port city was developed by the United Fruit Company?

The story behind the answer

The Guatemalan port city developed by the United Fruit Company was Puerto Barrios.

Puerto Barrios lies on Guatemala’s Caribbean coast in the department of Izabal. The city grew alongside efforts to connect Guatemala’s interior with an Atlantic port, allowing coffee, bananas, and other exports to reach international markets more efficiently.

United Fruit’s influence expanded after its associated International Railways of Central America developed transportation links in the region. The company eventually controlled Puerto Barrios’s docks, railways, banana production in Izabal, and the Great White Fleet, its shipping operation. That concentration of infrastructure and commerce made the port central to Guatemala’s export economy.

Livingston was an older Caribbean port and an important nearby settlement, which makes it a plausible distractor. Champerico and San José are Pacific-coast ports. Puerto Barrios is the Caribbean port most closely associated with United Fruit’s Guatemalan operations.
