Who was the runner- up of the men's singles at the 2016 US Open?

The story behind the answer

Novak Djokovic was the runner-up in the men's singles at the 2016 US Open. He lost the final to Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka in four sets: 6–7, 6–4, 7–5, 6–3.

Djokovic entered the tournament as the defending champion and the No. 1 seed, but Wawrinka produced a powerful performance after dropping the opening set. The victory gave Wawrinka his third major singles title. All three of his Grand Slam final victories had come against the world's No. 1-ranked player at the time.

The final was Djokovic's fifth defeat in a US Open final, a record that placed him among the tournament's most successful but also most frequently thwarted finalists. He had won the championship in 2015 and had also reached the final in several earlier years. The 2016 event was played on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Readers sometimes confuse this result with the 2016 Wimbledon final, which Djokovic did not reach. At that year's US Open, Wawrinka was champion and Djokovic was the runner-up.
