Who was the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare?

The story behind the answer

The Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare was Minerva.

Minerva was associated with wisdom, justice, law, victory, crafts and strategy. Her warfare role emphasized planning and disciplined military intelligence rather than the uncontrolled violence traditionally associated with Mars. She therefore represents the thoughtful, skilled side of conflict as well as intellectual achievement.

The Romans eventually identified Minerva with the Greek goddess Athena, especially from the 2nd century BC onward. That identification explains familiar symbols such as the owl, spear, helmet and olive tree, although Minerva also had distinctly Roman religious traditions.

Minerva formed the Capitoline Triad with Jupiter and Juno, one of Rome’s most honored divine groupings. Her major festival, the Quinquatria, began on March 19 and was associated with artisans, students, teachers and other skilled professions. She was not Venus, the goddess of love, nor Diana, who was linked with the hunt and the moon.
