Who was the queen consort of James I during the 1605 Gunpowder Plot?

The story behind the answer

The queen consort of James I during the 1605 Gunpowder Plot was Anne of Denmark.

Anne became queen consort of England, Scotland and Ireland when her husband, James VI of Scotland, inherited the English throne in 1603 and became James I. She and James had been married since 1589 and had several children who survived infancy.

The Gunpowder Plot aimed to kill James and other members of the political establishment during the state opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605. Anne was not the intended target named in the conspirators’ plan, although the royal family’s security and succession were central concerns in the aftermath.

Anne is sometimes confused with Henrietta Maria, who became queen consort after James I’s son Charles I succeeded him. Henrietta Maria did not marry Charles until 1625, two decades after the Gunpowder Plot.
