The Catholic conspirator who joined the Gunpowder Plot was named Thomas Wintour.
Thomas Wintour, also written Winter, was one of the original members of the conspiracy. He was the brother of Robert Wintour and a close associate of Robert Catesby. His knowledge of continental Europe helped the plotters seek support and contacts abroad.
Wintour helped recruit Guy Fawkes, who had served as a soldier in the Spanish Netherlands. He was present during the conspiracy’s planning and later fled with Catesby and the other survivors after the discovery beneath Parliament.
Wintour was captured after the confrontation at Holbeche House. He was tried in Westminster Hall in January 1606 and executed at Westminster on 31 January. The name is sometimes written “Thomas Winter,” but Thomas Wintour is the form used in the principal historical article and question.
