Who was the photographer and art dealer married to Georgia O’Keeffe?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was the photographer and art dealer married to Georgia O’Keeffe.
Stieglitz first encountered O’Keeffe’s charcoal abstractions through photographs sent to him by the artist and exhibited some of them in New York in 1916. He became an important promoter of her work and photographed her extensively over many years.
They married in 1924. Their relationship connected O’Keeffe to Stieglitz’s circle of photographers, painters, writers, and modern-art advocates. Stieglitz also operated influential galleries that introduced American audiences to modern European and American art.
Their marriage is central to O’Keeffe’s biography, but it did not define the whole of her career. She developed an independent artistic identity, spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico, and continued working after Stieglitz died in 1946.
