Answer
Benjamin Franklin
Answer
Benjamin Franklin
Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer of the Declaration of Independence, commemorated during America250, at age 70.
Franklin represented Pennsylvania in the Second Continental Congress and served on the Committee of Five that prepared the declaration. He was already internationally famous as a scientist, inventor, printer, diplomat, and political writer when he signed the document in 1776.
John Hancock is often guessed because his large signature is the most visually prominent, but Hancock was not the oldest signer. George Washington did not sign the Declaration at all; he was serving as commander in chief of the Continental Army. John Adams, another major revolutionary leader and future president, was younger than Franklin.
