Where did the First Continental Congress meet, a key event commemorated by America250?

The story behind the answer

The First Continental Congress met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia, a key event commemorated by America250.

Delegates from 12 of the 13 American colonies gathered there from September 5 to October 26, 1774. Georgia did not send delegates because Loyalist sentiment remained comparatively strong there at that stage of the crisis.

The congress formed a coordinated colonial response to the Coercive Acts, which Britain had enacted after the Boston Tea Party. Its delegates approved the Continental Association, a boycott of British goods, and sent a petition to King George III.

Carpenters’ Hall is sometimes confused with Independence Hall, where the Second Continental Congress later met. Independence Hall was then known as the Pennsylvania State House. The two buildings are both in Philadelphia but hosted different revolutionary-era gatherings.
