Who was the Mongol commander at the Battle of Ain Jalut?
Answer
Kitbuqa
Answer
Kitbuqa
Kitbuqa was the Mongol commander at the Battle of Ain Jalut, where the Mamluks defeated a Mongol force in 1260.
Kitbuqa was a Naiman Christian general and a trusted lieutenant of Hulagu Khan. After Hulagu withdrew most of his army from Syria, Kitbuqa remained in command of the Mongol troops left west of the Euphrates. He continued the advance southward, bringing his force into conflict with the Egyptian Mamluks.
The battle took place on 3 September 1260 in the Jezreel Valley. Mamluk commanders Qutuz and Baybars used a feigned retreat and concealed troops to draw the Mongols into an ambush. Kitbuqa resisted fiercely, but his army was defeated and he was killed or captured and executed, according to differing accounts.
Hulagu planned the wider Mongol campaign, while Kitbuqa commanded the troops actually engaged at Ain Jalut. The battle became a major turning point because it halted Mongol expansion toward Egypt and the Levant.
