Who was the master of ceremonies at Woodstock? Chip Monck was the master of ceremonies at Woodstock.
Edward Herbert Beresford “Chip” Monck was originally hired as Woodstock’s lighting designer and technical director. He planned the stage lighting and helped construct the performance setup, but his responsibilities expanded dramatically as the festival unfolded. He became the voice that guided the audience through the chaotic, rain-soaked weekend.
Monck made stage announcements, introduced performers, delivered practical safety instructions, and warned the crowd about hazards such as climbing the sound and lighting towers. His calm, distinctive announcements helped organizers communicate with hundreds of thousands of people in difficult conditions.
The answer is sometimes confused with Hugh Romney or Wavy Gravy. Romney, who later used the name Wavy Gravy, led the Hog Farm’s unconventional security and support operation. He was an important Woodstock figure, but he was not the festival’s master of ceremonies. Monck also introduced farm owner Max Yasgur to the crowd.
