Who was the main promoter and public face of the 1969 Woodstock festival?

The story behind the answer

Michael Lang was the main promoter and public face of the 1969 Woodstock festival.

Lang had already helped organize the 1968 Miami Pop Festival before becoming involved in Woodstock. He worked with Artie Kornfeld, John P. Roberts, and Joel Rosenman to develop the 1969 event, which was formally known as the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

Lang was especially visible during the festival’s planning and production. He helped recruit performers, negotiate the site, and manage the event’s presentation, making him one of the figures most closely associated with Woodstock’s creation.

A common mix-up is to identify Lang as Woodstock’s sole organizer. The festival was a partnership among four principal organizers, while Woodstock Ventures handled the business structure. Lang later remained active in concert promotion and helped organize Woodstock ’94 and Woodstock ’99.
